Elementary

Grades 1-6

A Strong Foundation for Faith & Learning

The elementary years at Community Lutheran School are a time when students build the academic, spiritual, and personal foundations that will carry them forward. In Grades 1–6, students grow in knowledge and responsibility while continuing to be nurtured in a Christ-centered environment where they are known, supported, and encouraged.

Families from Readlyn, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, Denver, Oran, Fairbank, Littleton, Sumner, Tripoli, Klinger, and surrounding communities choose CLS for this strong, faith-filled foundation.

CLS provides a structured, consistent approach to learning - grounded in tradition and attentive to the needs of today’s students.

Academics at CLS

Elementary students receive instruction in all core subject areas, including:
  • Reading & Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Religion

Instruction emphasizes strong fundamentals, clear expectations, and thoughtful progression from grade to grade. Small class sizes allow teachers to provide individual attention, identify learning needs early, and support students as they grow in confidence and skill.

Students come to CLS from communities across the region, including Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, and many smaller towns throughout northeast Iowa.

Faith Integrated Daily

Faith is woven into every part of the elementary experience at CLS. Students participate in daily prayer, Scripture reading, religion instruction, and weekly chapel services.

Students continue learning:
  • Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers
  • The Lord’s Prayer
  • Bible stories and Scripture
  • Christian hymns and songs
These practices help students develop a shared language of faith and establish habits that anchor them spiritually at school and at home.

Learning in a Supportive Community

Elementary students at CLS learn in a close-knit, family-oriented environment where relationships matter. Teachers know their students well and partner closely with families to reinforce values, expectations, and growth.
Older and younger students interact regularly through chapel, events, and shared activities – encouraging leadership, responsibility, and care for others.

Beyond the Classroom

Elementary students also benefit from experiences that extend learning beyond daily lessons, including:
1

Weekly chapel services

2

Field trips

that support classroom learning
3

Music and performances

including school programs and musicals
4

Community service opportunities

5

Special events and traditions

throughout the school year

Preparing Students for Middle School

As students progress through Grades 1–6, teachers gradually encourage greater independence, organization, and responsibility. By the end of sixth grade, students are well prepared - academically, socially, and spiritually - for the transition to middle school.

They enter middle school with:
  • Strong academic skills
  • Confidence as learners
  • A growing sense of responsibility
  • A firm foundation in faith

Growing Together at CLS
