Spiritual Life

Growing in Faith. Grounded in Christ.

At Community Lutheran School, spiritual life is not a separate program – it is the foundation of everything we do. From early childhood through middle school, students are guided to know God’s love for them, understand their identity in Christ, and grow in faith that becomes personal, meaningful, and lived out each day.

Worship and Chapel

Students gather regularly for weekly chapel services, coming together in worship, prayer, and reflection on God’s Word. Chapel provides a shared experience across grade levels, reinforcing that faith is something we live together as a community.

Chapel messages and practices are designed to meet students where they are - introducing foundational truths to younger students and encouraging deeper reflection and application for older students.

Luther’s Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Luther’s Evening Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Establishing a Firm Foundation

Prayer and worship are woven into the daily life of Community Lutheran School, creating habits and foundations that serve students well beyond their years at CLS.

Students learn and regularly pray Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers, the Lord’s Prayer, and other age-appropriate prayers and hymns. Through repetition and practice, these words become familiar and meaningful – forming spiritual habits students can return to in moments of joy, challenge, and uncertainty.

Lutheran liturgy provides structure and consistency, helping students develop a steady foundation rooted in God’s Word. These daily anchors are not just routines for today; they are tools students carry with them for a lifetime – at home, in church, and wherever life leads.

Biblical Integration Across Learning

Scripture is integrated into every subject area at CLS. God’s Word is not confined to Bible class, but shapes through every discipline how students learn, think, and engage with the world.

Teachers intentionally connect biblical truth to academics, helping students understand how God’s Word informs:
  • Character and decision-making
  • Relationships and responsibility
  • Curiosity, creativity, and service
This integration reinforces what families teach at home and helps students see faith as part of everyday life.

Growing in Faith - One Stage at a Time

Spiritual growth at CLS is developmentally appropriate and built over time.

Younger students

are introduced to Bible stories, prayer, and worship in ways that are familiar, comforting, and joyful.

Elementary students

deepen their understanding of Scripture, learn to apply faith to daily life, and grow in confidence expressing what they believe.

Middle school students

are encouraged to ask questions, reflect more deeply, and begin taking ownership of their faith as their own.

Throughout every stage, teachers and staff walk alongside students - modeling faith, encouraging growth, and pointing them to Christ.

Owning Their Faith

Our goal is not simply for students to know about God, but to know Him personally. CLS guides students toward developing a personal relationship with Christ - helping them understand God’s love, their identity in Him, and the hope they have through faith.

As students grow, they are encouraged to think thoughtfully about what they believe, why it matters, and how their faith shapes who they are becoming.

A Foundation That Lasts

At Community Lutheran School, spiritual life is about building a foundation that students carry with them – grounded in Scripture, strengthened by community, and rooted in the unchanging love of Christ.
This Christ-centered foundation unites students and families from across Eastern Iowa, including Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, and surrounding communities, through a shared commitment to faith-filled education.
